A goal in the last minute of each half cost Wycombe Wanderers dearly having led three times in a pulsating match.
The home side got off to a great start when Darren Currie shot them ahead from 25 yards after collecting a knockdown from Johnny Dixon in the fourth minute.
Chesterfield proceeded to dominate as Ian Evatt and Chris Brandon set about breaking down the home side. It was one such exchange that enabled Brandon to lob Steve Williams in the Wycombe goal on 15 minutes. The home gloveman had already beaten away efforts from Brandon and Mark Allott.
Wanderers regained the lead when Jermaine McSporran fired into the roof of the net on 20 minutes as on-loan Iffy Onuora set him up.
The same player continued to cause problems in the air throughout the half, but it was the visitors who equalised right on the stroke of half time when Mark Hudson converted a cross by Allan O'Hare.
On 55 minutes, Steve Payne timed a good header from a Hudson free kick only to see Williams snatch the ball out of the air. After two substitutions Dannie Bulman for Charlie Mapes and Simon Patterson for Dixon, Bulman sent a 35-yard ball for Currie whose cross was perfection for Patterson to head home on 61 minutes.
As the visitors pressed for an equaliser, O'Hare headed wide from a Hudson free kick when well placed on 85 minutes.
But Chesterfield kept going and on 90 minutes Andy Rushbury headed in at the near post after defender Roger Johnson was knocked off the ball by the busy Brandon to level the scores at 3-3.
