Second Division leaders Plymouth Argyle destroyed Chesterfield with an awesome six-goal first-half salvo that took their winning run to seven games in this 7-0 victory at Home Park.
The free-scoring Pilgrims, who netted five times in the opening 17 minutes, were led by French midfielder David Friio, who went on to complete the first hat-trick by an Argyle player for more than three years.
Forward Nathan Lowndes netted twice, with Friio's fellow midfielders Lee Hodges and Tony Capaldi completing the rout.
Even normally cautious Argyle manager Paul Sturrock confessed that the first-half performance was the best he had ever seen from his team, while his Chesterfield counterpart Roy McFarland said his team's destroyers were "absolutely certain" to win promotion to the First Division.
Argyle took the lead in the fourth minute, when Hodges capitalised on Chesterfield goalkeeper Carl Muggleton's spilling of Buster Phillips' cross.
Seven minutes later, Capaldi claimed his second goal in successive matches by rounding off a Hasney Aljofree free-kick, and then Lowndes, with a low shot, and Friio, with a free header from Capaldi's corner, doubled the margin.
Within a minute, Lowndes was teed up by Mickey Evans for his fifth goal in seven games.
Friio claimed goal number six nine minutes before the interval, smashing home his 11th of the season after Evans had headed down a hanging right-wing cross from Paul Connolly.
The second half was something of an anti-climax as Chesterfield raised their performance and Argyle coasted to the final whistle.
Friio rounded off the afternoon when he headed home substitute Ian Stonebridge's corner in the 89th minute to complete Argyle's biggest home win since 1936, and one short of their best ever result.
