Chesterfield stretched their winning hoodoo over bitter local rivals Mansfield to eight years as a goal in each half earned them a comfortable derby victory.
Hometown boy Gareth Davies was their hero, sweeping in the crucial second goal in the 54th minute from Glynn Hurst's lay-off - his first goal for the club in only his second game.
Steve Payne had given the Spireites a deserved 39th minute lead, powering a 25-yard free kick through the defensive wall and into the bottom corner after Mansfield's debutant defender Mark Lever had been lucky not to be red carded for hauling back Hurst.
Afterwards delighted manager Dave Rushbury said: "I'm delighted for Gareth. Last week he made his debut in front of his home fans and this week he has scored in a local derby. Overall we deserved it, our work rate was tremendous."
However, dejected Mansfield boss Stuart Watkiss apologised to his fans at the final whistle, saying: "A lot of local pride was at stake today, but we came up short. We have let down a lot of people, especially the fans."
It took the Stags 81 minutes to force Chesterfield keeper Carl Muggleton into a save when Wayne Corden's low drive was well blocked by the keeper. Muggleton then dived full length to keep out substitute Iyseden Christie's looping header.
Until then the home side had been restricted to long-range efforts, the best coming from Scott Sellars whose first-half free kick landed on the roof of the net and Colin Larkin three minutes into the second half when his fierce drive brushed the upright.
The Spireites, in contrast, carved out several well-worked chances after surviving fierce pressure in the opening 15 minutes - and striker Hurst should have had a hat-trick.
He volleyed Martyn Booty's deep cross over from just six yards in the first half, saw his terrific 25-yard scorcher finger-tipped away for a corner by the flying Kevin Pilkington a minute into the second half and then stabbed wide with just the keeper to beat four minutes from time
