Notts County Midfielder Paul Bolland struck a second-half winner to earn his side their first win of the season.
Bolland pounced in the 48th minute of a tense game to claim the points and sent local rivals Chesterfield to the foot of Division Two. Both sides started the day as the only two in the division not to have registered a victory so far and it was the Magpies who showed first, forcing a flurry of corners in the opening minutes.
But the home side hit back and almost took the lead just after the 20-minute mark.
Mark De Bolla, making his debut on loan from Charlton, showed his Premiership class when he turned well on the edge of the area and curled a right-foot effort towards to corner of the net.
But County stopper Steve Mildenhall dived full length to brilliantly tip the ball around the post and keep the scores level.
Simon Baldry then waited a glorious chance for the visitors where he scooped over from eight yards and De Bolla was denied twice more by Mildenhall as Chesterfield ended the first half on top.
But Billy Dearden's men were first out of the blocks after the break and went ahead just three minutes just three minutes in with a move started and finished by Bolland.
The midfielder converted Mark Stallard's low centre from ten yards after originally winning the ball in the centre circle.
The Magpies rarely looked like throwing away their lead following Bolland strike and were only threatened once when Ian Evett blazed high and wide 14 minutes from time.
Afterwards, County boss Dearden said he was relieved that his side had finally chalked up their first win in seven attempts.
He said: "Chesterfield was never an easy place to visit so to win so comfortably is very pleasing indeed.
"We could have had two or three in the second half, but I am happy with just the one and we have something to build on now." But Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland slammed his side, who are now the only team in division two still looking for a win. He said: "It goes without saying that I was disappointed.
"We did okay in the first half, but lost our way after the break. At half time we talked about keeping solid, but left ourselves wide open. There can be no plusses out of the performance."
