The match itself was a drab dreary affair with both sides afraid to attack, all the players might have had a picnic in the middle of the pitch it was so boring where was the attacking local derby spirit and passion? it was probably left in the dressing room.
We carved out two good opportunites in the first half and fluffed them both if either had gone in we would have won the game with ease, however we decided to defend prior to Mark Innes's sending off which was justified by the way you do not react to another player in that way and our chance was lost. We so nearly managed to hang on for a point we deserved but Anthony Kay's excellent goal got Barnsley three points they barely deserved.
What worried me about Barnsley was their lack of football on the pitch it was like watching our dear old manager John Duncan's team again time and time again they lofted long balls to Barry Conlon in the vane hope he would flick onto Daniel Nardiello, Blatherwick and Evatt defended these with ease. This was not the same Paul Hart when he was our manager the team attacked with flair and creativity, this Paul Hart hardly had a shot on goal. I expect Barnsley to improve however a word of warning if they continue to play like this for the rest of the season they will lose more than they win.
As regards to our performance it must get better it was worrying to watch how we couldn't break down a side with our quick players hopefully these things will have improved by the time we take on Macclesfield in the LDV Vans trophy on tuesday. Fortunately I shan't be going on tuesday as I'm going to watch The Bees in concert however my spies will be.
A final word about Barnsley I was very impressed with two of their players Stephen Mcphail a magician with the ball and Barry Conlon a hard working centre forward.
Impressive they were Disappointing we were.
