Veteran striker Wayne Allison is leaving Chesterfield by mutual consent due to limited opportunities with the League Two side.

He was disappointed recently at not being offered the chance to fill the recent assistant manager's vacancy.

The 39 year old had earlier in the year also expressed his concern about his limited playing appearances this season.

He has been combining the role of player and reserve team coach but this role is expected to cease at the end of the season as the likelihood is that a further playing contract is not being offered.

The club has agreed that the Chief be allowed to leave the club now to pursue other interests.

Defender Kevin Gray will step in to take responsibility for the reserves until the end of the season.

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "Wayne Allison has had a marvellous football career spanning 20 years but we are unlikely to be able offer him a role next season and fully understand the reasons why he would now like to move on."

"We wish the Chief all the best for the future."

Wayne Allison said: "I've enjoyed being at Chesterfield but the time is now right to move on and I leave on good terms wishing the club every success for the future."

Wayne Allison started his football career, alongside Lee Richardson, at Halifax Town in July 1987 and has enjoyed a distinguished career at Watford, Bristol City, Swindon, Huddersfield Town, Tranmere Rovers, and Sheffield United, before joining Chesterfield in June 2004.

So far he has made a total of 878 appearances in all competitions, scoring 208 goals.
