Chesterfield manager John Sheridan believes his players will learn from the experience of their Carling Cup defeat to Middlesbrough. First-half goals from Scott McDonald and Julio Arca put the Championship club in control but the Spireites set up an exciting finale when Dwayne Mattis pulled a goal back midway through the second half. "We have played a very good side who have brought a lot of quality in and I like playing against good opposition and hopefully we will learn, especially the younger players who will see why they are playing at a higher level, the way they move the ball and create angles," said Sheridan. "I thought we just stood off them and gave them too much respect in the first half but I was really pleased with our efforts in the second half and we had a right go but we just didn't get that break. "The second half we played it like a cup tie and got in their faces, we raised the tempo but unfortunately we gave ourselves a bit too much to do. I think we matched them second half. "I was very pleased with the response I got from the players in the second half, we were excellent and we had some good opportunities."
