Pre-Season Friendlies Update

The Spireites kicked off their Pre-Season with two home matches against higher opposition. Saturdays game was against Nottingham Forest for the Steve Blatherwick Benefit match. The Spireites won 1-0 thanks to Reserve Team Coach Wayne Allison scoring in the first half. "Blathers" kicked the game off and then gently left the pitch still suffering from his back problems which cruelly denied him further apperances for the Spireites.

Home debuts for Jack Lester, Steve Fletcher, Gregor Robertson & Kevin Gray coupled with a whole host of trialists made spotting the team formation etc a slight problem. Town played well with Lester looking sharp and hitting the post in the second half with a header.

Complete contrast to last night where the Spireites looked out of their depth against quality opposition (Championship). Sheffield Wednesday brought half of the crowd of 4400 last night as rumours were abound that Patrick Kluivert was about to appear. Sadly these rumours stayed as they were (to be honest if he couldn't be bothered to play for Newcastle at this stage in his career he ain't going to be bothered to play for Wednesday.

In the game the Spireites struggled to get the ball off the Wednesday midfield whereupon Chris Brunt shined. Brunt it was who scored the goal to a rather dubious penalty in the first half. Second half saw a whole host of changes and from this only Jamie Jackson made any use of the ball as he matched the Wednesday defence with his pace. The Owls bagged another late in the match through Wade Small.

Some good practice for the forthcoming Carling Cup tie with Sheffield United, as it stands as from a Supporters look on it we're going to get stuffed by the Blades....ah well it'll be one for the ground stats.
