Muggs a Spireite Hero

Carl joined the Spireites on loan from Leicester City in September 1987, this was needed after custodian Jim Brown was hurt conceding the first goal in the Spireites worst ever defeat at Gillingham. Muggleton was a willing young goalkeeper very raw and rash but endeared himself to the Spireites faithful with some whole hearted performances.

Muggs went back to Leicester with some experience behind him, the next time he would arrive at Saltergate the Blues were in big big trouble at the wrong end of the Division Two table in 1999, Carl played for five games whilst on loan from Stoke City deputising for the rubbish Mark Gayle.

Sadly Carl also turned out for the great unwashed however he knew the error of his ways when Dave Rushbury signed him in 2002 after Nathan Abbey left for higher things at erm….a variety of clubs. During the 02/03 season Carl peformed heroically behind a back four that did not concede a goal for a record eight matches, Carl suffered a broken leg in a game at Griffin Park Brentford which turned the season upside down despite being a good position for the playoffs the Spireites were forced to gain a point at Blackpool to ensure survival, Muggleton played in the last four games after recovering. Carl's enthusiasm was joyful to say the least, always taking time to talk to the supporters and encouraging the supporters to shout their loudest.

Carl was the number one keeper for the next two seasons until the arrival of Barry Roche, sporadic appearances last season and you kind of knew that Carl's contract was not going to be renewed, annoying Carl was not allowed to see out the final months of the season after his contract was paid up so denying the supporters a chance to thank Carl for his work, nevertheless Compton Street and many Spireites would like to thank Carl for his support for Chesterfield and his wholehearted performances. Good luck in your future Career.
