Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes has missed the cut and has not been selected as part of the Quantas U23 team to represent Australia at the Olympic Games this summer in Beijing.
He has recently been with the Aussies at a special pre-Olympic training camp, scoring two goals in a game against Chile U23s in Darwin.
With a number of over-age players also eligible for the Aussie squad Aaron, as a defender, misses out as the coach reduces the squad numbers for the trip to China.
Sad news for Aaron means some good news for Chesterfield. It means the Spireites defender is on his way home and will now be part of the squad for pre-season preparation and the start of the new football league season.
Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "We can understand Aaron's disappointment at not being selected for the Olympics but from the club's point of view there is a positive as Aaron will be here for the start of the season after all."
