WILSON Bowden Developments have today announced their intentions to submit a planning application to develop the former Demaglass site in Chesterfield. The site will be transformed with new retail and business premises and will provide a much needed new home for Chesterfield Football Club.
The property developer acquired the 22 acre site, ripe for regeneration in late 2005, and has since completed a major demolition and de-contamination programme in preparation for development.
The new 10,000 plus seater stadium for the country's fourth oldest football club, Chesterfield FC, will provide a new matchday experience for football supporters and will also be a venue in its own right for a variety of events, seven days a week.
The proposals also include plans to relocate the existing Tesco from its current location opposite the former Demaglass site, providing the national retailer with a much needed opportunity to expand their store in line with local demand. Once completed, existing customers can expect a new look superstore with extra space for additional ranges.
The proposed development plans to be submitted at the end of February are being brought forward jointly by the three parties; Wilson Bowden Developments, Tesco and Chesterfield Football Club.
Neil Hartley, Development Director at Wilson Bowden Developments comments,
"The former Demaglass site is an important site for Chesterfield, equally important is its regeneration to bring it back in to use. To have major brands already in the town, Tesco and Chesterfield Football Club, behind the regeneration of the site presents an exciting opportunity for growth and the creation of a landmark scheme".
Jonathan Bennett, New Store Acquisitions Manager for Tesco comments,
"We are delighted with the opportunity presented to us through the regeneration of the former Demaglass site; this opportunity will enable us to expand our store whilst remaining loyal to our existing customer base in Chesterfield".
There has been talk of a new stadium for Chesterfield Football Club located on this site for some time now and public feedback has been positive, fans and residents of Chesterfield have enthusiastically welcomed the move for their home town club.
Barrie Hubbard, Chairman of Chesterfield Football Club added,
"It is exciting news for both the football club and the town that after so many previous setbacks we now have the opportunity to fulfil our long-standing aspirations to provide a new sporting stadium for North Derbyshire".
The development proposals will be on public display in Chesterfield during February (date to be confirmed) following which a detailed planning application will be submitted to the council.
