Defender Janos Kovacs is to join Lincoln City after turning down the offer of a new improved contract at Chesterfield.

The Hungarian was at Sincil Bank Stadium today to agree terms on a two-year contract with the Imps, which will commence on 1 July.

As he is under the age of 24, the Spireites are entitled to a compensation fee, which will have to be settled by a Football League transfer tribunal after the two clubs failed to reach agreement on a fee.

He will be Lincoln City manager Peter Jackson's second signing of the summer.

"János is seven foot eight and he's driven from Hungary in a Mini to sign for Lincoln City - what a way to arrive!" said manager Peter Jackson

"He's a footballer I've seen for the past couple of years at Chesterfield and he's a footballer who I admire so I can't believe my luck that I've managed to get hold of him.

"He's already smashed two roof tiles in my office so I've nicknamed him Everest. He's a massive lad and I'm really looking forward to working with him.

"I was frightened that other people would come in and pinch him from me so I'm delighted he's signed.

"He's going to relocate to the area and we've a really good commanding centre-back at the Club now. You couldn't wish to meet a nicer kid but hopefully he's not that nice on the pitch!"

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "We are disappointed that Janos decided to leave but that's football and we all move on. We wish him well with his future career and thank him for his time with Chesterfield."

Janos Kovacs joined Chesterfield from MTK Budapest in August 2005 and has made a total of 62 appearances, scoring 2 goals. He scored his first ever goal for the Spireites against Lincoln City last season.
