Barrie Hubbard has laughed off claims that Chesterfield deliberately tried to avoid promotion.
A small percentage of Spireites fans have suggested that there was something sinister about the club's poor finish to the season, when they fell from possible play-off contenders to bottom half strugglers.
Whispers had it that the dramatic slump was because Chesterfield did not fancy life in The Championship, but chairman Hubbard feels the allegation is ridiculous.
Hubbard stressed that injuries contributed to their disappointing finish.
"We have heard various rumours and it's all nonsense," he commented. "Anyone who thinks the club do not want to get promoted is stupid.
"We suffered with injuries to most of our experienced players all at the same time, and that had a detrimental effect.
"If we achieved promotion we would get extra income from the Football League and various other sources and we would get bigger gates - especially in the away end if we were in a higher division - why wouldn't we welcome that?"
