Davies double sends Spireites top

Craig Davies hit a double as Chesterfield edged out Wycombe 2-1 to surge to the top of League Two. The Wales international powered in Drew Talbot's pin-point cross in the 27th minute and beat goalkeeper Nikki Bull to clinch the second-half winner just nine minutes after Ben Strevens had levelled. Chesterfield took the early initiative when Jordan Bowery lashed over and the home side responded when Stuart Beavon's close-range strike was ruled out for offside. The disallowed goal seemed to spring Chesterfield into life and only a minute later defender Andy Sandell's sliced clearance let Talbot in to provide the perfect assist for Davies to head home. Wycombe came out battling after the break and equalised in the 64th minute when Strevens reacted quickest to smash in a loose ball after the visitors failed to clear a corner. But 24-year-old Davies posted the perfect reply, racing quickest on to substitute Jack Lester's through ball to stab the Spireites ahead. Davies came within a whisker of a hat-trick when his long-range effort cannoned off the crossbar as the home side failed to carve out a chance to equalise.
