Chesterfield V Southend at Proact Stadium - Match Preview

Roberts worry for Spireites

Gary Roberts is an injury doubt for Chesterfield ahead of Southend's visit to the Proact Stadium.

Roberts has been struggling with a heel problem and the playmaker has not trained this week.

Matty Brown will miss out after sustaining a hamstring injury while fellow central defender Ian Evatt continues to build up his match fitness following a lengthy spell out after knee surgery.

Evatt, who will be captain when he regains fitness, got 70 minutes under his belt in a practice match this week and is scheduled for another run out against Sheffield Wednesday next week.

Southend will be without midfielder Marc Laird.

Laird has been ruled out for between six to eight weeks after damaging medial ligaments during last weekend's 2-0 victory over Northampton, joining long-term absentee Julian Bennett (knee) on the sidelines.

However, fellow midfielder Kevan Hurst hopes to be back in contention having played 90 minutes in a midweek friendly after overcoming a knee injury.

Defender Mark Phillips missed out against the Cobblers last weekend with a slight groin strain and will again be assessed.
