Returning players swell Blues squad

Defenders Liam Cooper and Nathan Smith have resumed training and could be in the Chesterfield squad for the visit of Hartlepool.

Centre-half Cooper has been out recently with an ankle injury while a persistent ankle problem has kept full-back Smith on the sidelines for several weeks.

Sam Morsy was included in the squad that travelled to Exeter last Friday following a lengthy absence with a knee injury. In his pre-match press conference on Monday Spireites boss Paul Cook revealed that he had to resist the temptation to bring on Morsy at St James' Park but hinted that the midfielder may get a taste of the action on Boxing Day.

Winger Gary Roberts is nearing a return from his hamstring injury, with Cook saying:"Fingers crossed, we might see him involved over Christmas - looking more to the Cheltenham and Northampton games, rather than Hartlepool and Dagenham."

Hartlepool teenager Brad Walker hopes to have earned a recall to the starting line-up after scoring his first senior goal for the club at the weekend.

The 17-year-old fired Pools' equaliser two minutes after stepping off the bench to replace Simon Walton in Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Burton and the 6ft 3in midfielder has given boss Colin Cooper plenty to think about.

Cooper has opted to play wide midfielder Jonathan Franks as a lone central striker in Pools' last two away games and could be tempted to revert back to a similar formation.

Defenders Jordan Richards (double hernia) and Dan Jones (ankle) will play no part as Pools chase their first win in five league games.
