Chesterfield 2-4 Crewe Alexandra

Three Goals in the Second Half for Crewe's Luke Varney were enough to see of the Spireites in dramatic stuff at Saltergate this evening. Crewe took the lead early on through Nick Maynard followed by a headed equaliser from Derek Niven.

Crewe took the lead early in the second half and it took the Spireites until five minutes from time to level scores again through a Paul Hall goal. The referee decided to play for Crewe at this point and blocked a Hazell clearance which fell kindly for Varney and he slotted it past Roche. Varney then pushed through for a fourth with only a minute of additional time to spare.

The Spireites played some good stuff down the wings and a 2-2 scoreline going into additional time was probably a fair result, but the referee saw to that albit accidentally of course but that's just about the luck we are having.

So we fall for the sixth time at this stage in this comp and we now try to grab something from Saturdays game at Rotherham. Fingers crossed, a repeat of last season would be just the tonic.

Hally bagged his fourth of the season.
