BIG MATCH PREVIEW

Last updated : 28 September 2004 By Paul Fisher
Macclesfield Town started the season with three wins from three games and
went to the top of the Coca-Cola League Two. Nosebleed territory for a club
who have been recent perennial battlers against relegation. This up turn in
fortune was mainly due to the managerial nous of Brian Horton and the goals
of big Jon Parkin, who is the club's current leading goalscorer with six in
all competitions.

Since then it's all gone a bit lumpy as the Silkmen have suffered three
defeats to teams at the bottom of the League due to what can only be
described as rank bad refereeing. Firstly at Southend United there was the
corner that never was. The Shrimpers scoring their winning goal from it.
Then against Chester City there was the goal that never was. The referee
giving a 93rd minute present to Ian Rush on his home managerial debut. Then
even worse at Kidderminster Harriers, as highlighted on Sky's "Goals On
Sunday", there was the penalty that never was. The incident taking place
many yards outside the penalty area and the Kidderminster player running on
for several steps before deciding he had lost the ball so he had better fall
over.

When the Silkmen get weaving in midfield then they look more than a match
for any side. Of late the goals have dried up for Parkin and with Matt
Tipton stuttering as he is on the cusp of becoming the club's top League
goalscorer, then it's the midfield providing the goals at the moment. At the
Moss Rose, the Macc Lads are doing the business, but away from home it's a
different story.

The Compton Street would like to thank Dave for giving us his view from Moss Rose.
