Goalkeeper Barry Roche has agreed to join Morecambe on a two year deal after Chesterfield agreed to his release. The 26 year old Irish-stopper has been an almost ever present for the Spireites for the past two seasons and joins the Shrimps on a free from 1 July 2008.

The 6ft 4ins keeper played 140 games for the Spireites since joining from Nottingham Forest in July 2005, but said he was "delighted'' to sign for the Shrimps.

He said: "I have a lot to thank Chesterfield for because they gave me a chance in the Football League. Their goalkeeping coach Steve Sutton was superb for me and I will always be grateful."

"We had a good season last year and really should have made the play-offs but it wasn't to be.''

Roche is part of a double swoop made by Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy who has also signed winger Neil Wainwright from Darlington.

Barry Roche added: "Like Neil, Sammy McIlroy was a real draw for me. I have heard some good things about him and the club and I can see no reason why we can't improve on last year.''

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "We thank Barry for his time with Chesterfield and we wish him all the best for the future."
