were confident of a decent start to the season if the new players gelled
together well.
A draw at MK Dons and a win over play-off regulars Bristol City in our first
two games boosted optimism further before three draws and three defeats
meant the fans were soon questioning Paul Hart's team and tactics (diamond
formations, five man midfields, playing Jacob Burns).
The win over Huddersfield last Saturday was vital and saw the return of
Stephen McPhail from injury but was swiftly followed by the 7-1 humiliation
at Man City in the Carling Cup.
The table doesn't lie but I reckon we've been a bit unlucky not to have a
few more points on the board. Our habit of conceding late goals and a
sending-off cost us points but the team has looked more solid of late (Man
City excepted where we only had one centre-back) so I think the game against
the Spireites will be a tight affair.
The signings of Paul Reid (Northampton), Tom Williams (Peterborough) and yes
even Barry Conlon (Right Said Fred) have looked good as has McPhail when he
plays however the jury is still out on Nick Colgan (Hibs), Bobby Hassell and
Tony Vaughan (both Mansfield).
The form of young midfielder Nicky Wroe has been another plus point but the
signing on loan of Daniel Nardiello (Man Utd) but only putting him on the
subs bench has mystified most Reds fans.
So far so average then, hopefully things will improve quickly before Peter
Ridsdale gives Hart the axe or gets his cheque book out.
