A game between MTK Budapest versus DVSC Debrecen was in the offing as it was the only game being played in Budapest as the other three sides were away.
For some reason the game was kicking off at 6.00pm but wasn't being shown on television so a few beers around Budapest was on the agenda. We set off to the ground via the various metro and tram stations ( Budapest's transport system is excellent rather like Prague's) and we got to the ground around 5.30, I purchased three tickets to the tune of 1800 forint each (£5) through a broken glass window at the side of the ground it was very bizarre dodging the edges of the glass to hand my money over, as we entered the ground and made our way to the seating area we asked the steward where were our allocated seats his reply was " welcome, let me see you're tickets......you can sit anywhere" which we thought was rather good so we sat to the right of the half way line.
As we had got off the tram previously my mate had said look at the scoreboard and it had shown 3-0 so we thought the game had already started but looking through a gap in the fence we noticed that it was the ladies teams that were playing prior to the men.
Now Debrecen is some 200 km away from Budapest but they brought around 250 supporters and as soon as the players came out of the tunnel someone let off a flare and this mass of green smoke came across the pitch, then someone in the away section set fire to something and that was happily burning away the police and stewards just let them get on with it meanwhile the supporters were being filmed by the police.
As for the game well two goals in the second half made MTK winners in what was a poor game, my lasting memories of this match, two incidents spring to mind first of all my mate going in to the Ladies toilets to relieve himself, innocently of course and this child sat next to us who for the whole 90 minutes ate what can only be described as Bird Seed, I expected the Boy to whistling and saying "who's a pretty boy then" followed by the random headbutting of a bell.
Anyway in conclusion the experience was good as much as going to a new ground can be especially in a different country, if anyone is going to Budapest then I recommend wizz air who specialise in eastern european flights and the UEFA website for the fixtures.
